DNA Testing Services Statement

Friday 27 March 2020

Due to the ongoing situation with the Covid-19 pandemic and the UK Government’s latest position requiring people to remain at home, the Animal Health Trust has decided the responsible position is to no longer receive case referrals through AHT Small Animal Referrals and AHT Equine Clinic. We are also no longer able to receive and process submissions for anatomic pathology, microbiology, histopathology, clinical pathology and canine DNA testing through our Diagnostic Laboratory Services.

In addition, following a period of dire financial constraints, and now with the economic implications of Covid-19 having a direct effect on funding, our charity is facing imminent closure. The Trustees and Executive Committee continue to seek emergency funding, including the potential use of recently announced Government Schemes, in order to save the unparalleled knowledge and expertise the organisation houses.

At this point we are unable to advise when this situation will change. Staff have been furloughed and are prohibited from working (according to Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme requirements and the COVID-19 UK lockdown). A decision on the long-term future of the AHT will be taken at a later date.

Please check back here for any future updates.

If you have an outstanding order for a canine DNA test:

  • If you have a swab kit for a test you have purchased, please hang on to it until we resume the service.

  • If you have sent in your swabs but not yet received a result, unfortunately we will not be able to process these samples until the service has resumed.

  • Unfortunately, we will only be able to process refunds for tests purchased if and when the service is resumed. We understand this is upsetting, but it is not within our control. Please spare a thought for the 257 employees of the AHT whose livelihood and careers hang in the balance.
